Stylized village group project inspired by Fable.
As a class we have been given a task of creating a stylized village inspired by game Fable. We were free to pursue our choices and ideas. Firstly our group has decided to name the village ‘’Bell Town’’ and everyone contributed their ideas of what buildings and to what purpose they should exist in the village. As well as made plenty research on the style and colour range that will be used in or village, and agreed on buildings. So among butcher, baker, watermill, tavern, brothel and many others. I contributed with idea of creating Stables and also agreed to take responsibility to create it. The style was set to be inspired by game ‘’Fable’’. I have done my own research regarding stables, in various games as well as in real life, The visit at Guildhall gave me rough idea of what Tudor style building looks like, I prepared the building base and roof, unlikely everyone else who choose tiles as their roof, I asked my group if it would be ok if I used thatch for my roof. There was no objections, as I proceeded I used big thick wooden beams to support the front smaller roof of the stable and the back- storage area. While everybody prepared their beautiful windows for their buildings, I choose to leave stable simple and more realistic, so therefore my windows were just a rounded brick holes at the front and back of the Stable top level and with no glass in them because stable is rather poorer version of structure and not fancy enough to have proper windows due to the fact that it’s purpose is for the animals and an owner. I have also made much bigger wooden door to everybody else, which also helped me a lot because I didn’t had to worry much about their size being too small for example. I choose walls to be made out of mixture of clay and hay, so appropriate texture will be required in order to achieve this effect. I was also advised to use green worn out colour for the wooden beams, It seemed rather weird since Fable doesn’t use such colours in theirs, but since people insisted I tweaked the colours of my original texture and applied it. During group discussion I got some helpful feedback from my group which purposed that I create more of the Thick and wide wood beams on the sides of the stable, so that the structure looks more steady and genuine. I quickly proceeded to realize this brilliant point out. I have then started to work on textures after unwrapping and assigning bits of my Stable to materials The General outcome looked good but the final image I had in my head was far off, I have worked on the windows and extension roof. The group came to the point of asking people what else they can make to be used for the rest of the group. I volunteer on making Sacks of grain, Pitchfork, Axe and haystacks. The others volunteered for other smaller things like lamppost or…a boat, or wood planks for the bridge. I had to yet even try the spot appointed for my stable because I haven’t yet checked the size it actually might take in the engine. I was right to check it because house model next to mine was so big it barely left any space for my stable, also taking into account that stable had to be big because…. well stables usually are. In general, my model didn’t lack anything, size was correct doors were well done size wise and even props however still the colours for the textures I was advised to do seemed wrong to me, but I left them at that. However, my personal experience with the group wasn’t that helpful, people mostly split up rather quickly to do their things and people who don’t speak that often were included less into the project. I have also encountered a lot of inconveniences close to handing in our work. I was greatly delayed because of people who were uploading small bits of their work at the last minute, my model was completed and checked, with all collision walls and ready for uploading, and regardless of the queues made for each person to put their work and time set, these were ignored and literally I had to wait an hour for someone to finish putting their less important props and allowing others who used a minute where I had to check my model, for someone else to squeeze instead and explaining themselves ‘’that it was very important and will take only a minute’’ where some people waited to upload the whole building structure. And therefore if any mistakes arose within the engine it took even more time for others to fix them with their models. I might take partial blame to it as to the fact that I haven’t spoken that often since I was interrupted quite often and whatever I had to say was disregarded, I decided then just to listen, volunteer for the props and don’t speak anymore, also because I immediately got on with the work and later on some last minute’s decisions were made and the props I produced for the group at the end weren’t used by anyone else but myself. At the end I personally think that this is a first for all kinds of experiences for me, I have never worked before with a team of different developers and designers, and although this very experience wasn’t that good and pleasant I do hope and look forward to future, better ones. I should also make sure to stick more to the style set rather than listen to advices of some individuals which mislead me into creating a building that looked much different to the style of Fable game. Also I Will try to recreate the model, and improve my future modelling skills, also to concentrate more on the handbook and not advices that might change my idea completely.
